Who Are We

Freedom From Hunger Campaign is a farmer membership based organisation operating in the Lower and Central River Region of the Gambia in the food security sector, with a vision to create A productive sustained agriculture, with farmers and rural Communities, having access to productive inputs, leading to their improved food security, income and welfare. FFHC is affiliated with 148 affiliated women farmer groups in LRR and CRR FFHC.

Our Mission

Our collective mission is to empower the poor, especially women, to create a world without poverty and hunger. FFHC works with and through its farmer membership based organizations in the Lower and Central River Regions of the Gambia in creating the enabling environment towards the attainment of food self sufficiency. FFHC mobilizes resources through project designs, partnership engagements and networking in enabling it attain these desires

Our Services

The Peculiarity about Freedom from Hunger Campaign (FFHC) is that it was established by Government in 1969 as an NGO. This was with the conviction to build an institution outside the government bureaucracy through which support to the neediest parts of the population could be channeled. As a charitable non-profit organization, FFHC is a founding member of the NGO umbrella body- TANGO and is also registered with the NGO Affairs Agency in 2003 as A1 NGO. FFHC has its head office located at Mansakonko the seat of the regional Governor and all other regional departments and institutions.

FFHC has had a broad community-based agricultural focus centred on women farmers, rice growing and agronomic Improvements (improved varieties and crop production, improved access to agricultural inputs, anti-saline structures and water retention dykes, animal traction, horticulture, post-harvest storage, etc) and Environmental protection activities.

By virtue of its creation, the Organisation works with women groups, mother clubs, youth groups, the elderly and virtually all cadre of the communities in the regions.

Our program focuses but not limited to the following

01.

Rice Production

This intervention enhances a safe and reliable access to rice fields by women farmers to boost rice production. It involves the construction of causeways, bridges, babysitting houses, culverts etc.

 

02.

Crop Production

As our mandate is complimenting the efforts of the Government in the access to food security, FFHC ventures into all aspects of crop production and productivity.

03.

Environmental Conservation

Strengthening the capacities of farmers and forest duelers in the conservation and restoration of the natural forest cover through the promotion of community forest concepts. Other activities include agroforestry practices, orchards and general tree planting activities.

04.

Income Enhancement strategies

This includes the development of vegetable gardens through the use of appropriate and low cost irrigation technologies, horticulture training and the creation of marketing linkages and the promotion of the production and marketing of honey.

05.

Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Initiatives

Capacity building for communities on disaster preparedness and response techniques, Support to disaster victims, Literacy training, Infrastructural support to disaster affected or prone communities.

06.

Low Cost Irrigation

We provide technical information, education, training and sensitization to famers and the general public on the availability of a low cost, effective and efficient irrigation technology called SMILE B. We installed the technology in gardens, homes orchards public places on demand by interested persons. The various technology components include: The drilling of tube wells, Manufacturing and installation of irrigation pumps, Installation of drip irrigation systems
